RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
