Seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
