The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
